Parents Are OK is a family safety app that lets adult children know their elderly parents are going about their day — without surveillance, without wearables, and without asking Mom or Dad to press a button every morning.
It works by quietly observing the normal signs of life on a phone your parent already uses: the screen unlocking, the device charging, a bit of movement in a pocket. If those signs stop for longer than they should, you are the one who gets notified.

How it works
The app has two modes — one for the parent, one for the child — in a single download.
Elder mode
Installed once on the parent’s phone and then forgotten.
- Runs silently in the background.
- Uses the phone’s own sensors and usage patterns — no microphone, no camera, no location tracking of where you go.
- Shows a small persistent notification so nothing happens behind your back.
- Battery-friendly: it piggybacks on the phone’s built-in maintenance windows instead of keeping a live connection open.
Guardian mode
Installed on the child’s phone.
- Pair with your parent’s device using a one-time 6-digit code or QR scan.
- See an at-a-glance status: last active, battery, charging, online.
- Get a push notification (and an optional SMS) when something looks off.
- Adjust how sensitive the alerts are, or pause monitoring during a hospital stay or a trip.
What triggers an alert
The app uses a “dead man’s switch” pattern — it watches for the absence of normal activity rather than trying to detect a specific emergency. That means it keeps working even if the phone is destroyed, drowned, or powered off.
You’ll be notified when:
- No activity detected for longer than your threshold (phone untouched, no unlocks, no movement).
- Phone has been offline for too long.
- Battery is critically low and not charging.
- A fall is detected (Android only, via the accelerometer) — the parent gets a prompt to cancel; if they don’t respond, you’re alerted.
Every threshold is configurable per pairing, and alerts are de-duplicated so you won’t get woken up at 3 a.m. twice for the same thing.
What we deliberately don’t do
- ❌ No live microphone or camera access.
- ❌ No continuous location tracking or map of your parent’s movements.
- ❌ No social feed, no chat, no ads.
- ❌ No data sold to third parties.
The app tries to be the smallest, quietest piece of software that can credibly say “your parents are OK” — and get out of the way.
